Temporary Closure of Big Buddha Phuket from 2 September 2024

PHUKET, THAILAND – YoPhuket.com Travel Advisory – 2 September 2024

The iconic Big Buddha Phuket has been officially closed to the public starting 2 September 2024, following a safety order issued by the Royal Forest Centre due to landslide risks in the surrounding area.

This precautionary measure comes in response to a tragic landslide incident on 23 August 2024, which claimed the lives of 13 people and injured 19 in the vicinity of Nak Koet Hill, where the statue is located.

Why the Closure?

Investigations have revealed that parts of the Big Buddha site encroach upon protected forest land, with around 5 rai out of the 20-rai site lacking formal approval. The Royal Forest Department has moved to seize six unauthorized buildings and file complaints regarding land use violations.

Additionally, continuous rainfall has destabilized the terrain, prompting authorities to restrict all access to the area for the sake of public safety.

What This Means for Tourists

  • Entry is strictly prohibited to the Big Buddha area until further notice.

  • No sightseeing, religious activities, or access to the hill is allowed during the closure.

  • Tour agencies are advised to remove Big Buddha from tour routes and provide alternative attractions.

There is no confirmed reopening date as the area remains under geological and legal review.
